about

For "Waves," I played a Sigma acoustic guitar that Rachel bought for me for Xmas from Little D's in Denton. Sigma manufactured Martin's budget line of Japanese acoustics in the '70s (and also a line of Gibson-esque electrics referred to variously as the "Big Stud" and "Heavy Stud," and later dismissed by some '80s guitar mag as being ideal only for "short '70s rockers with bad attitudes.") I plugged the Sigma into a Webcor reel-to-reel deck of highly variable speed and played it all back through the deck's tube monitor and the above-mentioned Ampeg while I was unloading the dishwasher (which you can hear if you listen closely with headphones. It's meant to echo "Tea," the opening track on Charalambides' Our Bed Is Green — our debut release from '92 — where you can hear me washing dishes).
